Weather

The weather in Cape Town is mostly sunny and dry yet we do have our wet days, especially in winter. It is very important, however, to come prepared for all weather conditions. The weather in Cape Town, and in particular; on Table Mountain, is very unpredictable.

We recommend always bringing a warm jersey and waterproof gear. If you do not have the appropriate attire, please let us know and we will arrange the correct gear for you. All in all, unless the weather poses a serious safety risk, our policy is to trek on as different weather can often increase the fun and make for amazing photo opportunities.

Although there are reports of muggings on Table Mountain it is an unlikely event.

We have taken ages from 10 to 75 years old. Whether or not you are able to come will depend on your fitness level and experience but we are confident that we will be able to cater for you.

Hiking Route Duration

There are many different walks and hikes on Table Mountain and surrounds with varying duration. We offer both half-day and full day hikes with our shortest walk being 3 hrs and our longest 7 hrs.

Hiking Route Difficulty

Hikes can vary greatly in intensity. We offer everything; from a relaxing stroll in Newlands forest to a full on assault of India Venster, one of Table Mountain’s more adventurous routes. If necessary, we are more than happy to assist you in picking a route that aligns itself with your fitness level.

Of course, we provide hikes of all difficulty-levels. A lovely walk to do for beginners would be the Pipetrack on Table Mountain’s lower slopes, a slow meander carving alongside the mountain high above Camps Bay. We also offer walks in the beautiful Newlands forest and a relaxing stroll on Table Mountains summit. Please enquire with us about how to book for these easier walks.

This is entirely up to you. However, we strongly advise taking a guide as Table Mountain is not to be underestimated. The weather can change in a heartbeat and it is easy to get lost on the summit in bad weather conditions. Moreover, despite Table Mountain being a well signposted area, it is not easy to always find the best routes.

Over and above this, our expert guides are there to enhance your experience and will take you on routes rarely travelled by tourists; to the lesser known gems that Table Mountain has to offer. Your guide will act in a mindful, professional and dedicated manner ensuring that you have an exciting but safe trip, whilst learning about the rich cultural and natural history of our mountain.

There is the option to take the cable way down once you have reached the top of the mountain. Otherwise, your guide may be able to suggest an easy descent route if you are feeling particularly exhausted.

There are two routes that can get you to the top of the mountain relatively quickly; one is a straightforward (and rather steep) ascent and the other is a more exciting and adventurous route involving some rock scrambling. Both of these routes take around 3 hours to complete. Once at the top, we will take the cableway down.

Yes, of course. We often have groups heading up Lion’s Head and the other Table Mountain routes that you’ll be able to join. If there isn’t a group for your selected date, or you’d prefer to go solo, there is a single supplement cost of R600.

Included:

  • Professional mountain guide
  • Pick up and drop off transport anywhere in the city centre/Atlantic Seaboard
  • High quality photography
  • Local insights about the flora, fauna and history
  • Route navigation, safety & reliability.

Excluded:

  • Cable car fee (R200)
  • Park entrances i.e. Kirstenbosch (R70)

This is very unlikely but if the cable way is closed then your guide will take you down the mountain at an extra cost of R200 p/p.

Cancellation fees for all hikes are charged on the following basis per person:

  • Outside 7 days prior to hike departure: no fee.
  • Outside 24 hours prior to hike departure: 75% fee.
  • Within 24 hours prior to hike departure: 100% of full fare.

Generally speaking we recommend an early start so as to avoid the crowds and sun (5:00am – 7am start times depending on the month). It can get incredibly hot in summer and, if starting late, your experience may be spoiled by being uncomfortable. That said, we do understand that you are on holiday, might not be an early-riser and would like to take things a bit more relaxed. We are generally open to slight time changes unless the weather doesn’t allow for this. Bear in mind that we also provide sunset hikes, primarily for Lion’s Head, (4:00pm – 6:00pm start time depending on the month), if you are not an early bird.

We will come and pick you up/drop you off if your accommodation is in the city centre/Atlantic Seaboard. Alternatively, and if our vehicle is already full, we will ask that you meet us at a pre-determined meeting point.
